As an individual living with allergy, the most important thing to you is relief from your symptoms so you can get on with your life. Before your medical professional can treat your symptoms, however, the exact cause of your allergy must be identified. Approximately $8 billion were spent in 2001 on prescription allergy medications. Most of these prescriptions were provided without benefit of identifying the causative allergens. In one study, nearly half of the patients treated with drugs without testing were found not to be suffering from allergy at all. These patients may have been taking unnecessary medication, perhaps for years, the long term effects of which are unknown.
